my mom’s argument against piracy is “well what if you wrote a book and one person bought it and then hundreds of people got to read it for free and you didn’t make any money!”
MOTHER YOU HAVE JUST DESCRIBED
The Federal Bureau of Investigation moved against a group of suspected online pirates Thursday, targeting the popular file-sharing website megaupload.com a day after Washington lawmakers were besieged by complaints about legislation designed to crack down on the online sharing of pirated copies of music, movies and other material, people familiar with the matter said.
Investigators said there was no connection between arrests in their two-year investigation and the political firestorm that erupted this week over a pending vote on the Stop Online Piracy Act.
This is a big deal, and even if it’s not related to SOPA, the timing certainly does a lot to put it on the minds of those worried about the law.
I am definitely late with this one. Forgive me. (This has been one of the longest days of my life and the queue is a lifesaver…) But nonetheless, it’s better now than never. And this is something that needs to get out there.
If you haven’t heard already, there are two bills going through American Congress, SOPA and PIPA, that are on behalf of the entertainment companies to censor things on the internet that might be infringing on copyrights without due process. Meaning, not only pictures, GIFs, and videos could be blocked from view, but entire sites can be shut down, just if they say that it is infringing on something in the entertainment industry, with not so much as a word to the owner(s).
We all know infringement and piracy is illegal and shouldn’t be done. However, the way these bills are set up, they can easily be abused. It infringes on the right to freedom of speech, and could be used to stop self-expression, stop movements, even stop spreading of the Gospel. Most of you know about what is foretold about the End Times. Think of the possibilities that the government could do if these bills became law.
I urge you to take some action. Do a Google search to get some more info, watch a video breakdown or read an article of what these bills are and why so many people are against it, sign a petition, call or write your senator. SOPA so far has been benched indefinitely by President Obama, but PIPA is still to hit the Congress floor on the 24th of this month. Please take the time to do something.
I’m starting to agree, looking at Twitter. -_-
Tweets from kids trying to use Wikipedia for their homework—and failing. SOPA!
We knew it was gonna happen. It’s totally satisfying, right?
For those of you who are currently unaware, Tumblr will be shutting down on the 18th in protest against SOPA and PIPA.
A massive internet shutdown will happen as many sites: Facebook, Google, DeviantART, Twitter, Wikipedia, and SO MANY MORE go black in their protest to uphold our right of free speech!
